Citi just pulled the rug out from under churners. The Strata Premier and Strata Elite used to play by the standard 48-month rule — wait four years, grab the bonus again. That language is gone, replaced by the dreaded "once per lifetime" phrasing. If you've ever held a Strata card, you're done. No second chances, no waiting it out.
This isn't a devaluation of points or a benefit cut. It's a hard stop on repeat bonuses. For folks who rotate cards every couple of years, the Strata line just moved from "core rotation piece" to "one and done." The math changes entirely when you can't circle back.
The Strata Premier still earns 3x on travel and gas, 2x on dining and groceries, and 1x elsewhere — solid for a $95 annual fee card. The Strata Elite carries a $395 fee but adds 4x on travel, 3x on dining, and a $100 annual hotel credit. But the welcome offers are now single-use tickets. If you already burned those bonuses years ago, these cards offer you zero signup value going forward.
Compare that to Chase's Sapphire line or Amex's Gold/Platinum ecosystem, where "once per lifetime" has been the norm for ages. Citi was the last major issuer keeping a reasonable reset window on its premium-ish travel cards. That window just slammed shut.
The new terms for Strata Premier state the bonus isn't available if you currently have or previously had a Strata Premier or the old Citi Premier. For Strata Elite, it's the same — any prior Strata Elite account kills your eligibility. We don't yet know how far back Citi's memory goes. Amex has similar language but in practice often resets eligibility after roughly seven years. Citi's wording is more absolute: the bonus "is not available" rather than "may not be eligible."
If you're sitting on a Strata card right now, the play is simple: keep it if the earn rates fit your spend, downgrade to a no-fee Citi card if they don't. But don't close it expecting to come back for another bonus in four years. That door is locked.
For anyone considering a first-time application — the bonus is still worth grabbing if you can hit the spend. Just go in eyes open: this is a marriage, not a fling.
