Finnair Plus has brought back its standard tiered bonus on purchased Avios, running through October 5. The structure is the same as always: buy more, get a bigger bonus. The top tier — 90,000 to 200,000 Avios — nets a 50% bonus and brings the effective price to about 1.45 cents per Avios.
Here's the full breakdown:
- 7,000–24,000 Avios: 30% bonus
- 25,000–54,000 Avios: 35% bonus
- 55,000–89,000 Avios: 40% bonus
- 90,000–200,000 Avios: 50% bonus
The annual purchase limit is 200,000 Avios per calendar year, so this promo essentially lets you max out your allowance at the best rate Finnair typically offers. One Mile at a Time runs the math slightly differently and lands at 1.41 cents each at the top tier — either way, you're in the same ballpark.
What you're actually buying
Finnair uses Avios, the same currency as British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, and Aer Lingus AerClub. But — and this matters — you cannot transfer Finnair Avios directly to those programs. You're buying Finnair Avios for Finnair redemptions (or for flights on Oneworld partners booked through Finnair's engine).
The sweet spots remain Finnair's own metal — particularly their lie-flat business class to Asia and Europe — and Oneworld partner awards priced through the Finnair chart. Japan Airlines first class, Qatar Qsuites, American Airlines transcon business: all bookable with Finnair Avios, often at lower surcharges than BA would charge.
Is it worth it?
At 1.45 cents, you're paying roughly $1,300 for 90,000 Avios (plus the 45,000 bonus). That same 135,000 Avios covers a round-trip business class ticket from the US East Coast to Tokyo on JAL with change to spare. Cash price? Usually $5,000+. The math works if you have a specific redemption lined up and award space exists.
Don't buy speculatively. Finnair devalued its chart in 2023 and could do so again. Award availability on JAL and Qatar is notoriously stingy. But if you're 20,000 Avios short of a Qsuites redemption you've already verified? This is the cheapest way to close that gap until the next promo cycles around.
Gifting is also an option if a family member needs a top-off — the bonus applies regardless of whose account receives the Avios.
Bottom line: a solid "top-off" promo, not a "stock up" opportunity. Buy with a redemption in hand, not hope in heart.
