AAdvantage Aviator Red
Overview
The AAdvantage Aviator Red has been one of the most interesting airline credit cards in the market — a Barclays-issued Mastercard that earned American Airlines miles with a dead-simple welcome bonus (make one purchase, pay the annual fee, get 60,000 miles). But here's the important news: Barclays is exiting the AA partnership, and this card is transitioning to Citi in 2026.
If you already have this card, you'll be automatically migrated to a Citi product. If you're considering applying, the card is no longer accepting new applicants as of late 2025. That said, existing cardholders still enjoy solid benefits: first checked bag free for you and companions, a companion certificate after $20,000 in spending, and straightforward 2x earning on AA purchases.
The Aviator Red filled an important niche — a Mastercard alternative in the AA ecosystem when Citi cards are all Mastercards too. With the transition to Citi, AA credit cards are consolidating under one issuer. For a full AA credit card strategy going forward, look at the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select or Citi AAdvantage Executive.
Key Benefits
- First Checked Bag Free: Free first checked bag for you and up to 4 companions on the same domestic AA reservation. Worth $35 each way per person.
- Companion Certificate: Earn a companion certificate after spending $20,000 in purchases during a cardmember year. Your companion flies for $99 plus taxes. Decent value on expensive routes.
- $25 Inflight Wi-Fi Credit: Up to $25 back in statement credits on inflight Wi-Fi purchases per anniversary year.
- 0% Intro APR on Balance Transfers: 0% for the first 15 billing cycles on balance transfers made within 45 days of opening. Rare on an airline card.
- No Foreign Transaction Fees: Use internationally without surcharges.
- Mastercard Benefits: World Elite Mastercard perks including cell phone protection, Mastercard Airport Concierge, and ShopRunner membership.
Annual Fee & Costs
- Annual Fee: $99
- Foreign Transaction Fees: None
- APR: Variable, typically 21.49% - 29.49%

- Late Payment Fee: Up to $40
Sign-up Bonus
Note: This card is no longer accepting new applications. The card stopped accepting new applicants in late 2025 as Barclays transitions its AA portfolio to Citi.
The Aviator Red was famous for its absurdly easy welcome bonus: 60,000 AAdvantage miles after making just one purchase and paying the $99 annual fee. No minimum spend requirement — just one purchase of any amount. It was one of the easiest airline card bonuses in history.
For new AA credit card applicants, consider the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select which offers up to 80,000 miles with a traditional spend requirement.
Earning Rates
- 2x miles on: Eligible American Airlines purchases.
- 1x mile on: Everything else.
The earning structure is simple but unremarkable. No bonus categories for dining, gas, or groceries — just 2x on AA and 1x on everything else. The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select matches the 2x on AA and adds 2x on gas stations and restaurants, making it the better everyday earning card for AA mile collectors.
Redemption Options
AAdvantage miles redeem through the American Airlines loyalty program:
- American Airlines Flights: Award flights on AA and partner airlines. Award pricing varies based on route, class, and availability.
- Partner Airlines: Redeem on oneworld alliance partners including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Qantas, and Qatar Airways. International business and first class redemptions can deliver incredible value.
- Upgrades: Use miles for cabin upgrades on AA flights.
- Hotels & Car Rentals: Available but generally poor value compared to flights.
AAdvantage miles are best used for partner airline premium cabin awards. A business class flight to Asia on Japan Airlines or Qatar Airways can deliver 3-5+ cents per mile in value.
Travel Credits & Perks
- Free Checked Bag: First bag free for you and up to 4 companions on domestic AA flights. Savings of $70+ per round trip per person.
- $25 Wi-Fi Credit: Annual statement credit for inflight Wi-Fi on AA-operated flights.
- Companion Certificate: After $20,000 spend, get a companion ticket for $99 plus taxes. Best value on long or expensive domestic routes.
- Reduced Mileage Awards: 7,500-mile discount on select MileSAAver awards. Modest but can save you miles on certain routes.
The perk set is serviceable but not exciting. The checked bag benefit is the real daily value driver.
Competitor Comparison
- vs. Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select ($99/yr): Same annual fee, same free bag benefit, but Citi adds 2x on gas and restaurants, preferred boarding, and a $125 AA flight discount after $20K spend. The Citi card is strictly better for new applicants. This is the natural successor card.
- vs. Citi AAdvantage Executive ($595/yr): The nuclear option with Admirals Club access, 4x on AA, and 10x on AA hotel/car portals. Completely different tier and price point.
- vs. Delta SkyMiles Gold ($150/yr): Similar bag-focused airline card for Delta flyers. Delta Gold is pricier but includes 2x on restaurants.
- vs. United Explorer ($250/yr): United's mid-tier option with 2x on United, free bags, and 2 United Club passes per year. More expensive but more perks.
Best For
- Existing cardholders: If you already have the Aviator Red, keep it until Citi migrates your account. The benefits remain active during the transition.
- AA loyalists who want a Mastercard: The Aviator Red was the only AA-earning Mastercard option. Post-transition, all AA cards will be Citi Mastercards.
- Balance transfer seekers: The 0% intro APR on balance transfers is unusual for an airline card and genuinely useful.
Not ideal for: New applicants (the card is closed to new applications). Look at the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select instead — it's the better AA card at the same price point and is actively accepting applications.
